think i should've ghosted you

about

that moment when you write a song called “think i should’ve ghosted you” and then you tell everyone about it lmao. there’s a funny story behind that title.

i actually got to play this at SongCon and it was the first time I’d played it live. I’m excited to finally share the full version. the song is kind of about dealing with being racially stereotyped/fetishized and low-key othered in relationships, and instead of being seen as an actual human being you’re just some exotic short-term adventure to make them feel more cultured or something. and it’s uniquely something women of color understand and have experienced. at some point it gets exhausting having to teach someone that other people outside of their bubble exist as individuals and not as props.

lyrics

Two years, three words that you never could say
Four months with her, suddenly you can’t wait
And I kept trying to replace you
Make you disappear from my head
And I kept trying to forget you
Let you settle for some blond girl instead

And just like that it’s so clear
I know why you’re not here
I know why you never meant to stay
You’ll never admit it
You just think my skin is
Something kind of fun till you throw it away
And maybe you just realized
I’m not like you inside
And you couldn’t handle what that implied
Maybe it was too much
Too much heat on your tongue
Maybe your adventure just stopped being fun

Maybe you hated the words that I said
Hated those sounds that you can’t understand
Oh, and I kept trying to make excuses
Bullshit, I’ll just call it what it was
I could be amazing
But in the end I’ll never be what you want

Oh, and just like that it’s so clear
I know why you’re not here
I know why you never meant to stay
You’ll never admit it
You just think my skin is
Something kind of fun till you throw it away
And maybe you just realized
I’m not like you inside
And you couldn’t handle what that implied
Maybe it was too much
Too much heat on your tongue
Maybe your adventure just stopped being fun

Just stopped being fun
Just stopped being fun
Maybe your adventure just stopped being fun
Maybe it was too much
Too much heat on your tongue
Maybe your adventure just stopped being fun

And I can’t make you care about what you don’t care about, what you don’t care about
(Maybe your adventure just stopped being fun)
I can’t make you care about what you don’t care about, what you don’t care about
(Maybe your adventure just stopped being fun)
